In 2013, however, Timberlake made his first solo album release in nine years, hitting the iTunes and Amazon download stores and then the physical shelves on April 24. The first single, 'Suit & Tie', paired Timberlake with Jay-Z, and the pair made an intriguing statement of intent, declaring that the two had no time for cultural divides that have become increasingly manifest in recent years, namely rap music and the hip hop-dominated black community. This was reflected further by the pair's decision to feature an all-black cast on their videos, a tactic that was again employed on the official album cover, where Timberlake was seen wearing a beret performed by a man who had been a victim of the 2005 New York subway system bombings. The album itself was filled with references to rap music and pop culture, from Timberlake's black sensibility to his love of early-20th-century German expressionist film, with the album's title being borrowed from the song 'My Love': 'The 20/20 Experience', with its double meaning as both the lyrical content and the three disc format. After this, the line-up of stars was completed by Kid Cudi, Justin Bieber and Kendrick Lamar, who made his US album debut.
Timberlake made an immediate impact on the album chart with The 20/20 Experience 1 of 2. This was followed by the hit single 'Mirrors', which was produced by Icona Pop and sampled from Kanye West's rap single 'Gold Digger'. The final hit, 'Suit & Tie', went straight to No. 1, with its video showing Timberlake as a contemporary version of the louche club-owner who marries a woman of good taste, but often seems to be missing her mind, as shown in a particularly bizarre dance sequence. The album's title track, 'Holy Grail', is an understated nod to the album's fictional vein metaphorically embraced by Timberlake's act, as he combines the time-honoured commonplaces of his musical style with a play on the meaning of 'Holy Grail', the ultimate'second chance' both musically and personally; Seattle monorail disaster is one such example, the politician who 'came in like a tiger/ And left like a lamb'. d2c66b5586
