On 21 August, C Company, 2 RAR, received orders to move to the southern part of the Udon Road to help out the New Zealand infantry company. They were already at the edge of the road and had moved south when a battalion of the VC 463rd Regiment approached. The company commander decided to withdraw back to the Udon Road. With the company commander absent, the other two platoons decided to withdraw also.
On the night of 18/19 August, Task Force Arrow was alerted that a major thrust of the VC 274th Regiment was approaching the ANZACS position at Lae. On 19 August, C Company, 3 RAR and B Company, 3 RAR, were deployed to Lae to cover the southern approaches to the town. Most of the Australian artillery was redeployed to support this operation, leaving the northern and western approaches vulnerable to the VC. The 3 RAR companies were unable to provide the required level of fire support so on 19 August Major Alan Hill moved his New Zealand infantry company, B Company, to Lae to cover the western approaches.[52] On the morning of 20 August, the VC began moving south and west towards the ANZACS position. By late afternoon, the VC had moved their headquarters to a position just north of the Mission area of Lae. The Australians were then reinforced by a composite company of the New Zealand Infantry Regiment and the 4th Field Regiment, Royal New Zealand Artillery.[53] On 21 August, the VC attempted to move south and as far west as possible. The New Zealand infantry company tried to defend the Udon Road, but was forced to withdraw.[54] On the afternoon of 21 August, the VC attacked through the cleared area of the mission, adjacent to the Udon Road. The New Zealand infantry company retreated; the next morning the VC recaptured the mission area.[55]
On 18 August, C Company, 6 RAR, located VC positions and engaged them with gunfire. VC were able to repulse the Australian force and the next day the Australians withdrew to Long Tan. On 20 August, D Company followed and cleared the western part of the Long Tan area with artillery support. On the morning of 21 August, the Australians found that the VC had left and the operation ended.[51]
