This month, Apple has released Mac OS X 10.3 Tiger, which is available for purchase as an upgrade for Mac OS X 10.2. However, it is not sold separately; it is included with the upgrade price. There is no difference between Mac OS X Tiger and Mac OS X Jaguar, other than one minor point of distinction: where Mac OS X Tiger was released on October 13, 2005, Mac OS X Jaguar was released on August 23, 2002.
Not compatible with OS X 10.2 Installing Tiger on a PowerPC system that already runs Mac OS X 10.2 is not supported by Apple. According to Apple's release notes for 10.3 (below), only Mac OS X Jaguar-based systems may be upgraded to 10.3 Tiger. The notes also state that 10.3 Tiger is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.2. As such, Leopard (10.4) is not officially supported by Apple on these systems.
Object-Oriented programming added to the Mac OS was initially a time saver for developers. It allowed them to create their programs using a standard set of rules. But while it was created with developers in mind, it also benefited users.
Jaguar's primary improvements were in its Finder and iLife. The Finder now featured a new interface, which gave more control to the user and allowed them to access applications and files with minimal clicks.
The Mac operating system got two new and powerful features in this version, including its new GUI (Graphic User Interface), and object-orientated programming abilities. The new GUI, introduced with the release of 10.3, was a huge shift in the way computers approached graphical interface. It had an extremely large focus on multi-touch features and gestures, and has quickly become the standard way in which developers create applications for the Mac.
iLife is now iLife for Mac. This is a suite of products that comes with the new operating system, and includes the following: iPhoto, which is a photo-management application; iMovie, which is an all-in-one video-editing application; and GarageBand, which is an audio recording and editing application.
