At the end of Dune Messiah, Paul Atreides walks into the desert, a blind man, leaving his twin children Leto and Ghanima in the care of the Fremen, while his sister Alia rules the universe as regent. Awakened in the womb by the spice, the children are the heirs to Paul's prescient vision of the fate of the universe, a role that Alia desperately craves. House Corrino schemes to return to the throne, while the Bene Gesserit make common cause with the Tleilaxu and Spacing Guild to gain control of the spice and the children of Paul Atreides.
Back in 2016, Legendary acquired TV and film rights to Herbert's iconic 1965 novel. Those who didn't read the book and its sequels may know the series best from David Lynch's 1984 film, which starred Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides. While it later attained cult status, the film flopped with critics and at the box office. But many praise the complex and imaginative world of the books, which feature a fictional drug called Melange and known as "the spice," as well as the dangerous sandworms that attack those who try to harvest it.
I think Dune2 has changed my whole life around and I'm going nuts over this amazing synth. What make it better if you have a wave editor you can copy wave forms from any old hardware synths into dune2. Look what you'll be having? Truly amazing.
The Spice Melange, commonly referred to simply as 'the spice', was a naturally produced awareness spectrum narcotic that formed a fundamental block of commerce and technological development in the known universe for millennia. It also played an important role in travel and cultural development as it is vital for space travel by enabling Navigators to safely guide space ships through fold space.
The spice originated on the planet Arrakis, where it was produced deep beneath the sands. It was created in a process whereby the fungal excretions of sandtrout would mix with water to form a pre-spice mass. This mass would then be brought to the surface of the desert through an explosion of pressure, and under the intense heat and air of Arrakis, melange would form. When the worms died, sandtrout would be released into the sand, and the cycle of creation would repeat.
By the time House Atreides arrived on Arrakis, melange had become the single resource that was capable of creating or destroying an empire. Consequently, Arrakis had gone from being a distant, poor, and unimportant desert world to a greatly prized fief, and management of the spice mining operations were considered a prestigious but difficult task. Spice collection was hindered both by the aggressive and territorial sandworms, and by the guerrilla tactics employed by the Fremen, who resented the presence of off-worlders (especially Imperial agents) who harvested the spice for themselves.
During the time of the God-Emperor Leto Atreides II, spice production lessened significantly due to terraforming efforts on Arrakis, and also due to Leto II's desire to control who within his empire could consume spice, and how much was consumed. However, by this time significant stockpiles of spice had been collected and hidden by Leto II. These later prove valuable for a variety of reasons.
Spice is the basis for many of the things found in Fremen daily life - it can be processed to create things such as spice paper, spice fibre or chemical explosives. It could also be refined to create spice essence or spice gas. Its actual appearance is only alluded to a handful of times throughout the saga:
In Dune Messiah it is stated that Guild Navigator Edric "swam in a container of orange gas ... His tank's vents emitted a pale orange cloud rich with the smell of the geriatric spice, melange"[1], and in God Emperor of Dune Moneo notes, "Great bins of melange lay all around in a gigantic room cut from native rock and illuminated by glowglobes of an ancient design with arabesques of metal scrollwork upon them. The spice had glowed radiant blue in the dim silver light. And the smell - bitter cinnamon, unmistakable."[2] Throughout the Dune Chronicles, it is said that melange possesses the odor of cinnamon.[3]
In Dune, Lady Jessica notes that her first taste of spice "tasted like cinnamon." [3] Dr. Yueh adds that the flavour is "never twice the same .. It's like life - it presents a different face each time you take it. Some hold that the spice produces a learned-flavour reaction. The body, learning a thing is good for it, interprets the flavour as pleasurable -; slightly euphoric. And, like life, never to be truly synthesized,"[3]
During the days of the Corrino Empire, the spice was the rarest and most valuable commodity in the known universe. It was said that it was so valuable that one briefcase full of spice would be enough to purchase an entire planet.
During The Butlerian Jihad, all "thinking machines" were hunted down and destroyed, with a commandment against their ever being used again, "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind". Instead, human Guild Navigators and their spice-warped abilities, serve the function normally performed by a navigational computer. Hence, interstellar travel relies on spice.
Due to the monopoly of the spice, finding a viable alternative gradually became the focus of certain groups - most notably the Tleilaxu. Control of the spice during the Corrino Empire was later eclipsed in scope by the God-Emperor Leto Atreides II. This led to protracted attempts to synthesize the spice, which eventually yielded positive results for the Bene Tleilax, some 1500 years after Leto II's death. As a result, the Tleilaxu became spice merchants and funded many of their endeavours through sales revenue.
In the aftermath of the battle of Arrakeen, legendary House Atreides warmaster Gurney Halleck takes refuge with spice smugglers, vowing revenge against the Harkonnens no matter the cost. House Atreides may be shattered, but it will never be forgotten. To embark on his mission of vengeance, Gurney Halleck must put himself on a collision course with not only House Harkonnen, but the Spacing Guild itself! Soon, Gurney and the smugglers may have an opportunity to deal a crucial blow to their bitter enemies, but at what cost? Will he finally have his revenge against the Beast Rabban? Or will they be met with certain death, their sacrifices all for nothing? Artist Francesco Mortarino (Power Rangers) brings the original short story adapted by original authors Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson to life in ways that will excite both fans of the novels and the recent hit film alike! Collects Dune: The Waters of Kanly #1-4.

Spice was the name for a type of illicit substance or substances in demand throughout the galaxy. Spice was mined at the spice mines of Kessel, where slaves such as captured Wookiees were worked to death turning mined medicinal spice mineral into a recreational drug. Spice mines could be found in several other planetary systems throughout the galaxy, including those of Ryloth and Naboo.[2] One variation of the narcotic known as ryll was mined on the planet Ryloth and had both scientific and recreational applications.[3] Sansanna spice was a type of spice that could be found throughout the galaxy.[4]
Padawan Reath Silas believed Captain Leox Gyasi spoke like how Grand Master Yoda would sound on spice.[6] The Pyke Syndicate used raw spice to create a powerful drug that Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum sent Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas to investigate.[7]
In 22 BBY,[8] an assassination attempt against Senator Padmé Amidala was initially suspected to be the work of disgruntled spice miners on the moons of Naboo, though it later transpired that the assassin was in fact hired by Count Dooku, the leader of the Separatists.[9] The laws on Naboo regarding spice were based on its use to achieve a recreational high, rather than its ability to numb pain. Medical-grade spice assisted Kharl of the Torada Collective with pain management for a chronic health condition, but it required leaving the Republic world of Naboo for the Separatist-aligned Nooroyo.[10]
When the Ohnaka Gang captured Count Dooku, they demanded a million credits in spice delivered in an unarmed diplomatic ship in exchange for handing him over to the Jedi.[11]After Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker were captured during a meeting to verify that the pirates did indeed have Dooku, the Gungan Jar Jar Binks and Senator Kharrus were sent with the demanded spice, though it was rendered irrelevant, as Dooku had already escaped by the time they arrived with it.[12]
In 20 BBY,[13] the pirate Hondo Ohnaka delivered missile launchers to the rebels on the planet Onderon after he was paid by the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. Upon seeing the leader Steela Gerrera, he tried flirting with Gerrera, and he told her she could be his new favorite spice. Gerrera then denied his advances.[14]
Imperial Moff Ghadi used a variant of spice known as polstine spice to blackmail Arihnda Pryce, then an aide to Lothal Senator Domus Renking. He described the spice as "highly prized, highly expensive, and highly illegal," and evidently even a light dusting on one's clothes was enough to guarantee a life sentence in prison.[1]
A pre-spice variant called scarn was the subject of a land dispute between the native Cyphari of the Afe clan led by Chief Joko and the human colonists led by Mayor Pord Benchel. The land dispute was engineered by human colonists Clay Tanoo, Lenora Scath, Brigte Polcery, and mercenary Nightswan as a means to gain access to the large scarn vein under the Afe Clan land. The conspiracy was quickly unraveled by Commander Thrawn and Ensign Eli Vanto, who brought a swift end to the land dispute by scorching and destroying the scarn vein with the help of TIE fighter pilot Lieutenant Gimm and Lieutenant Commander Osgoode.[1] 2b1af7f3a8
